Cemetery

The Bishop Hill Cemetery was created by the original Swedish colony in the 1800s. Now, it is the home of many unmarked graves from the original colony, current plots of residents and their family members, and the grave of the colony's founder, Erik Jansson.

In 2026, the Cemetery underwent new renovations to restore and maintain older graves falling into disrepair. This was funded by the Bishop Hill Old Settlers Association and a grant through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

The Cemetery is owned and maintained by the village government's team of volunteers. Each spring, they host a cleanup day.
