Colony School

The Colony School was built in 1861 following the 1861 dissolution of the utopian colony and provided the community with the need for education. The Colony School was later purchased and restored in 1953 by the Bishop Hill Old Settlers' Association to preserve local pioneer heritage.

  • 1846: The Bishop Hill Colony was founded by Swedish pietist leader Erik Jansson and his followers seeking religious freedom.

  • 1861: The communal colony officially dissolved, and the Colony School building was constructed.

  • 1953: The Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association purchased and restored the schoolhouse.

  • Present Day: The building functions as an active community space, hosting gatherings and local events managed by the Old Settlers' Association.
