Renovations Underway at Bishop Hill State Historic Site

Updated: 6 days ago

We are thrilled to announce that significant restoration and repair work is moving forward at the Bishop Hill State Historic Site, thanks to collaborative efforts from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Capital Development Board (CDB), JLK Architects, and dedicated local advocates.

What’s Happening

On April 7, 2025, a meeting was held in Bishop Hill to discuss upcoming renovations at the state historic site. This phase of the project includes five key buildings:

  • The Colony Church

  • The Boys Dormitory

  • The Bjorklund Hotel

  • The church restroom building

  • The small shed west of the restroom building

JLK Architects, who previously completed the Steeple Building Exterior Restoration Project in 2013, have been selected to develop an architectural plan for these restorations. Their familiarity with the site ensures a thoughtful and informed approach to preserving our historic structures.

Community Involvement

The design process is underway, with the first round of designs expected by early June 2025. Community members are encouraged to contribute relevant historic documents and images, particularly from the Colony period, to assist in informing the interpretation of these historic structures. Your contributions will play a vital role in ensuring the authenticity and accuracy of the restoration efforts.

While workers may be on-site conducting various investigations during the design phase, please note that a lack of visible activity does not indicate a lack of progress. Multiple rounds of designs will be submitted, with the final round due for completion by July/August 2026. This thorough process is essential to achieving a long-term and lasting restoration.

Funding Secured

We are pleased to report that funding has been appropriated to keep the project moving forward, marking a significant milestone in the restoration efforts. This financial support underscores the commitment to preserving the rich history of Bishop Hill for future generations.

Staying Informed

To facilitate communication between the renovation team and the Bishop Hill community, Jeff Nevins, Historic Sites Division Manager for the IDNR, has offered to serve as a liaison. This restoration project represents a significant step in preserving the heritage of Bishop Hill. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to this endeavor and look forward to the revitalization of our historic site.

An update concerning the funding for the Bishop Hill Project is as follows:

$12m has been appropriated for this phase of the renovations. That includes the work on the Colony Church, the Bjorklund Hotel, the Boys Dormitory, church restrooms, and shed. This money will go to both Architect & Engineering fees and expenses, as well as physical construction costs. This $12m is not a final dollar amount and the project could ultimately cost more or less depending on scope or issues that come up.
